Postal History
1644 (8 Feb.) Civil War period, entire letter from Burleigh in Stamford to Edward, Earl of Manchester; a lengthy entire in which six countersigning residents: James Harrington, Jo. Hatcher, Edw. Harington, C. Browne, Ewers Armyme and Jo. Osborne, appeal to Manchester to have his troops "of the Commonwealth" removed from Burleigh to Belvoir on account of the "great oppression and violence that our County of Rutland doth day by day suffer by the continual inroads of the enemy forces from Newark, Belvoir and Worton House together with the great burden that continually lies upon us to maintain our garrison". Letter sheet backed to card otherwise fine and the letter clearly legible, complete with address panel. Most interesting.
