The Matabele Runner Service
1888 (15 Sept.) 6d. on 6d. lilac and black cancelled by manuscript "B'wayo 15/9/88" in reddish ink and overstruck by a light strike of Mafeking (6.10) c.d.s.; the lower right corner has been repaired, nevertheless an important stamp used in Bulawayo before the arrival of the replacement c.d.s. Photo

The datestamps for Gubulawayo and Tati, bearing the word "Bechuanaland" were never put into service and there was a gap before suitable replacements could be made and sent. The earliest recorded examples of the new Gubulawayo c.d.s. is dated 10th November 1888 (see lot 318). It appears that in this interim time the postmaster, Rev. C.D. Helm, applied manuscript cancellations to the stamps on letters. This is believed to be the earliest of these manuscript cancellations of Bulawayo
