Libya, United Kingdom & Kingdom of Libya (1951-69), Order of Merit, gilt, mounted as worn; Omar Al Mokhtar Medal; Liberation Medal; Libyan Army Sports Medals (2), for Football, for Tennis, very fine (5)

Omar Al Mokhtar was an elderly Senoussi Shaikh who from the early 1920’s led the guerrilla fighting against Italian rule. In 1931 he was captured and after a summary court martial was publicly hanged. Subsequently resistance to Italian rule ended and the pacification of Libya was declared. The medal is awarded “in appreciation of the national efforts you made during the Italian invasion of the country and your excellent performance of duty”.

Medal of Liberation of the Senoussi Army 9 August 1940; this is the date Libyan exiles in Cairo agreed to support the British and led to the formation of the Libyan Arab Force – five infantry Battalions of volunteers.
