(x) An archive of nine Royal Navy administrative documents relating to life on board circa 1801-1808, featuring signatures of Henry William Bayntun, Charles Cunningham, Thomas Le Marchant Gosselin, William Johnstone Hope, Richard Goodwin Keats, Harry Burrard Neale and Vice Admiral Thomas Wells, among others

Letter signed by Captain William Johnstone Hope, written from H.M.S. Kent at sea directing the supply of eighteen bushels of coal to the ship’s carpenter, dated 29 February 1801, edge reinforced with tape and mounting residue to reverse, some light stains but still legible;

A duplicate memo recording the removal of “three live Bullocks” from H.M.S. Vanguard to H.M.S. Nereide on 17 June 1802, slight stains otherwise in very good condition;

Manuscript receipt of a new set of private signals to H.M.S. Theseus, signed by future Admiral Sir Henry William Bayntun on board H.M.S. Cumberland off the coast of Jerremy [San Domingo] on 2 July 1803, minor tear to margin and small central hole but clear and legible;

Letter requesting supply of boatswain’s and carpenter’s stores for use on board Trinity ship L’Unite, signed by Harry Burrard Neale on board H.M.S. Royal Charlotte on 19 November 1803, reverse repaired with old paper, minor creases, stains and two light pinholes, otherwise clear and legible;

Letter from the Victualling Board to Mr. Lewes notifying him of the order of two dozen tongues to be sent to Deptford, signed, among others, by Rear Admiral Sir Charles Cunningham, dated 24 December 1803, light staining and minor margin tears, otherwise in good condition;

Order of a survey on ‘Slops’, signed by Captain Richard Goodwin Keats on board H.M.S. Superb in Portsmouth Harbour, dated 25 August 1805, a number of small margin tears and folds with some missing paper, though legibility of text is not impaired;

Receipt of vegetables, limes and oranges for use aboard H.M.S. Melampus, signed by Captain Thomas Le Marchant Gosselin and dated 28 November 1801, in very fine condition for its age;

Memo from Admiral Douglas, and signed by him, ordering a supply of beds aboard H.M.S. Roebuck for the use of volunteers from the Danish Navy, dated 27 September 1807, minor ink and age stains, clear and legible;

Memo addressed to Lieutenant Mitchell of H.M.S. Acute, ordering him to make good “the Defects of the Gun Brig you Command… and her Stores and Provisions completed for Channel Service”, signed Vice Admiral Thomas Wells on H.M.S. Namur off the Nore, dated 16 December 1808, minor folds and light margin tears, age stains, otherwise clear and legible (9)
