(x) An archive of routine Royal Navy orders and documents, featuring a number notable signatures
Orders for Captain Mitford of H.M.S. Dutchess of Bedford to proceed to Tangier Bay, signed by Rear-Admiral John Purvis aboard Atlas off Cadiz, dated 16 November 1807, minor pinholes along folds, ageing;
Two orders to Captain Dunn of H.M.S. Incendiary instructing him to take transports under convoy to Port Mahon and to thereafter proceed to Oran under orders of Admiral Duckworth, both signed by Captain James Newman on board H.M.S. Loire, dated 1 and 2 June 1800, reverse respectively marked ‘Order 1’ and ‘Order 2’, each with light ageing and folds, otherwise good condition with clear and legible text (2);
Orders to Lieutenant Mitchell of H.M.S. Acute ordering him to proceed to sea and cruise the coast with the “purpose of intercepting the Enemy’s Privateers”, signed at Yarnmouth by Admiral William Douglas, dated 19 April 1808, slight pinhole along central fold, some ageing and stains but does not interfere with legibility of text;
Orders for Lieutenant Bucke of Acute to proceed to H.M.S. Superb and deliver “the men you have aboard belonging to that ship”, signed by Vice-Admiral George Campbell aboard H.M.S. Agincourt, dated 13 July 1809, minor edge wear and ageing;
Orders for Lieutenant Bucke of Acute to receive on board Colonel Donaberg and proceed immediately to Heligoland, signed by Admiral Douglas at Yarnmouth, dated 14 August 1809, ageing, a couple minor pinholes along folds, light edge wear otherwise clear and legible;
Orders for Captain Mitford of Espoir to proceed to the sea off the island of Pona to watch for “the approach of any strange ships”, signed by Rear Admiral George Martin, dated 22 July 1809, edge wear and water stains, does not interfere with legibility of text;
Orders for Captain Mitford of Espoir to put himself under the command of Captain Charles Adam, signed by him aboard Resistance at Palermo, dated 19 October 1809, water stains and edge wear, text remains legible;
Orders for Captain Mitford of Espoir to “take under your protection such Vessels as may be having Troops on board for the Sicilian Army” and to proceed to Palermo, signed by Admiral Sir Charles Cotton on board H.M.S. San Josef, dated 9 March 1811, minor edge wear and foxing, slight splits along margins;
Orders for Captain Mitford of Espoir to join Sir Cotton off Toulon, signed by Captain George Dundas, dated 26 June 1811, light stains and some foxing to reverse;
Orders for Captain Mitford of Espoir to proceed to Caligari and there meet with “His Majesty’s Minister” and then return to the Southern Rendezvous, signed by Captain George Dundas aboard Euryalus at Palermo, dated 11 July 1811, some stains and blemishes with minor edge tears, text is clear and legible;
Two orders for Captain Mitford of Espoir from Rear Admiral John Laugharne, the first ordering him to join Captain Hope at Smyrna and the second to send a copy of the list of defects affecting Espoir, both signed by Laugharne aboard Triton at Malta, dated 3 and 7 September 1812, some foxing and folds, with light edge wear and tear, text in each is clear and legible (13)
