The India General Service Medal awarded to Colour-Sergeant P. Green, 80th & 75th Regiments of Foot, who took a very fine Victoria Cross at the Koodsia Baugh, Delhi on 11 September 1857

India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Pegu (Pri... Patrick Green. 80th Regt.), pitted and worn overall, good fine

[V.C.] London Gazette 26 October 1858:

'Private Patrick Green, Her Majesty's 75th Foot for having, on the 11th of September 1857, when the picquet at the Koodsia Baugh at Delhi was hotly pressed by a large body of the Enemy, successfully rescued a comrade, who had fallen wounded as a skirmisher.'

Patrick Green was born at Ballinasloe, County Galway in 1824 and enlisted into the 31st (Huntingdonshire) Regiment of Foot in June 1843. After a short time in the 9th (East Norfolk) Regiment of Foot from April-October 1846, Green joined the 80th Regiment of Foot (Staffordshire Volunteers) on 1 November 1846. He served with them on campaign in Burma (Medal & clasp), before volunteering for the 75th Regiment of Foot (Gordon Highlanders) in January 1854.

He saw further action with this unit during the Indian Mutiny, taking his very fine Victoria Cross to go with his Medal & 2 clasps. He was presented with his Victoria Cross by Sir Colin Campbell, at Allahabad, India, on 28 July 1858.

Green returned to the 80th Foot in May 1861 and was discharged on account of disability in August 1863. The gallant Colour-Sergeant returned to the Emerald Isle and died at Cork on 19 July 1889. He is buried in the Aghada Cemetery. Whilst his V.C. was sold by Sotheby's in May 1926 (£42-0-0), the location of his Indian Mutiny Medal remains unknown; sold together with copied research.
