Provenance

The Little Busby Hoard of Roman Denarii, found at Little Busby, North Yorkshire, on 2 June 2021 [PAS YORYM-B64A28]

In delaying his adoption of the Pater Patriae moniker, denoted as P P on his coinage, Hadrian is said to have done so in conscious imitation of Augustus, who similarly delayed his adoption of the title until 2 BC. The new obverse inscription bearing the title also coincides with a reduction of die sizes for denarii, noticeable in comparison to the larger aurei of the period.
