Netherlands, George II, William IV of Orange, Stadholder, AR Gilt Medal, 1747, by Nicolaus van Swinderen, WILH . CAR . HENR . FRISO . PRINC . NASS . ET AR, draped bust right, rev. GLADIVS DOMINI ET GEDEONIS., Belgic lion rests its paw on a pedestal, inscribed HONY SOIT QVI MAL Y PENSE, decorated with an orange branch, HOLLANDIA PROCLAM : GVBERN. 3 MAII 1747, in exergue in three lines, 38mm, 23.26g (MI ii 629/317; van Loon suppl. 227; Eimer 615), with an integral loop for suspension, some faint hairlines to the fields, otherwise with a near proof-like brilliance to the fields and with vibrant toning, in hues of blue and ochre, scarcely seen with such quality, much as struck

It is believed that this medal was probably struck at Utrecht. The motto of the Garter 'Honi soit qui mal y pense' (shame on anyone who thinks evil of this), is introduced in allusion to the support given by England to the cause of the Stadtholder.
