'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the attack on the Fonsomme Line on the 2nd October, 1918. When no information had been received at Battalion Headquarters as to the position, he succeeded in getting to the front line through very heavy fire, bringing back valuable information. He repeatedly during the day and night went forward to obtain information and reconnoitre positions.'

[Bar to M.C.] London Gazette 10 December 1919, the original citation states:

'During the attack on the Oise-Sambre Canal on 4th November, 1918, the left flank of the battalion became exposed to enfilade enemy machine-gun fire, and was suffering serious casualties. By his gallantry and ability under heavy fire he saved further heavy casualties.'
