Thomas Stephen Coppinger was born on 14 July 1845. He was commissioned as Ensign into the 11th Foot (North Devonshire) on 20 April 1866, promoted to Lieutenant 2 September 1868, and advanced Captain on 20 April 1878. He served in South Africa with the Army Pay Department and was entitled to the medal without clasp (roll) attached to the 1/24th Foot. Coppinger was promoted Honorary Major on 1 October 1883, Honorary Lieutenant Colonel on 21 June 1891 and Substantive Lieutenant Colonel 16 February 1899. He served in the Second Boer War and was entitled to a Queen's South Africa Medal with a clasp for Cape Colony and a King's South Africa Medal with two clasps. Coppinger was advanced Substantive Colonel on 1 April 1901 and was sent home to England on 10 December 1902. He later became District Paymaster for the force in Egypt and died at Wimbledon in January 1929; sold together with an original photograph of him in uniform by Duffus Brothers of Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa.
