William Baker was born at Bristol on 13 January 1833 and enlisted into the 3rd Battalion Royal Artillery on 21 November 1854 as a Driver. Promoted to Gunner on 1 November 1857, he was further promoted Corporal on 30 July 1867 and transferred to the Coast Brigade on 1 June 1868. Baker was discharged from the Royal Artillery at Colchester on 14 June 1876, having served in the 6th Division Coast Brigade, Royal Artillery.
