John Stacey was born at Plymouth, Devon on 17 April 1891 and attested with the Royal Navy on 21 March 1910. He saw his first service afloat with Leander on 6 August 1910 later being posted to Faulknor on 7 August 1914. She was operating largely in the Irish Sea during the last years of the war, before joining the 12th Destroyer Flotilla in 1916.
Faulknor was present at Jutland with this unit in support of Jellicoe's Grand Fleet. She engaged a number of German destroyers throughout the action, taking part in the sinking of V48 leading her squadron on a torpedo attack on the enemy battleships. Faulknor failed to connect in this engagement but one of her consorts, Onslaught, managed to sink battleship Pommern.
Stacey was still with Faulknor the next year when she acted as escort for the bombardments of Zeebrugge on 12 May 1917 and Ostend on 2 June 1917. Finally she was present during the Zeebrugge Raid on 22 April 1918, he was to remain with the vessel until almost the end of the war. Stacey continued to serve for some time and was pensioned on 20 March 1932.
