Army Meritorious Service Medal, V.R. (283. Cr. Sergt. H. M. Talbot. (Late 2/21st. Foot)), lightly toned, very fine
Henry Morton Talbot was born at Gibraltar in 1829 and enlisted into the 34th Foot at Bristol on 24 September 1846. He transferred to the 53rd Foot to serve with his older brother on 31 May 1847 but transferred again, this time to the 99th Foot on 1 May 1849. Promoted Sergeant on 20 May 1849, he transferred again to the 2/21st Foot on 31 July 1858 where he remained. Further advanced Colour Sergeant on 7 August 1858, he remained with this rank and regiment until 14 February 1868. He was discharged at his own request while serving on loan to the Dumbartonshire Rifle Volunteers.
His papers note that he served 6 years and 11 months in the Australian Colonies and was originally entitled to the Army Long Service and Good Conduct medal which was exchanged for the Meritorious Service Medal offered here.
