William Fitzgerald Hervey was born in India on 21 March 1898. Educated at Glenalmond College, he enrolled into the Indian Army Cadet College, Quetta in 1915 and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the 10th Gurkha Rifles in 1916. Hervey was elevated to Lieutenant serving with the 8th Gurkha Rifles in 1917 and attached to the 10th Gurkha Rifles. After the end of the war, Hervey was employed at The Great Indian Peninsula Railway Company in Bombay and rose to become the chief traffic officer.
During the Second World War, Hervey served with the Indian Engineers, commanding 301 Indian Railway Operating Company. From 27 October 1941 to 24 January 1944 he served with PAIFORCE and from January 1942 to February 1943 was posted to Iran. Hervey died at Chichester in 1981; sold together with copied research.
