Albert Thomas De Vries was born on 12 September 1920 and was a clerk before he enlisted in the Union of South Africa Defence Force on 18 June 1940. De Vries served with 3 Field Regiment in the Middle East from 18 December 1940. Briefly leaving he served again in the Middle East from 1 October 1943 until 16 July 1945 with the 1/6 Field Regiment and was discharged on 17 August 1945. His address on his return was listed as 422 Christoffel Street, Pretoria. His original medals were despatched to him on 5 September 1953.
On 5 March 1987, De Vries made a sworn affidavit to the South African Police, Brooklyn Station to report that his medals and other personal items had been stolen from his home at 26 Matroosberg Road, Ashlea Gardens, Pretoria. A replacement set of medals were issued by the South African Defence Force; sold with service records, M.I.C., sworn affidavit, and re-issue documents from the S.A.D.F.
