Douglas Graham Riddall appears on the roll of 9 Commando, which saw heavy service in the Mediterranean during the Second World War. The unit was formed as part of Scottish Command in 1940 and saw their first action on Operation Sunstar, a raid on the French Coast in November 1941. They were posted to Gibraltar during Operation Torch and from there joined the Allied Invasion of Italy, launching a raid at Monte Argento in support of X Corps codenamed Operation Patridge.
After further action at Anzio they switched focus to the Balkans launching a raid on Spilje, Albania which resulted in heavy losses on both sides. After raids into Yugoslavia they joined Forcefox in Greece, formed of 9 Commando together with contingents from the S.B.S., L.R.D.G., the Raiding Support Regiment and the Greek Sacred Squadron.
They returned to Italy in March 1945 and remained there for the rest of the War. Riddall joined No 4 Commando on 1 December 1945, he was discharged on enlistment into the R.A.F. on 18 May 1947; sold together with Commando 'United We Conquer' enamelled Badge, a Commando Patch, and copied research.
