Donald Sutherland was born on 10 August 1920 at Helmsdale, Sutherland and was a fisherman by trade upon his joining the Royal Naval Reserve at Wick on 17 December 1938. With the outbreak of the Second World War, he was called to service and served on Davy and then the trawler Withernsea from June 1940 until December 1942.
Sutherland then went across to Malta and served in the HDML's at St Christopher, including HDML1254 from April-May 1943 and HDML12959 from May 1943-August 1945. She was paid off due to hull damage caused by gunfire from German shore batteries in the south of France. Sutherland was released in January 1946 but re-enrolled (No. 7377D).
