Alan William Lindsay was born on 17 February 1920 and is recorded in the 1939 census as a university undergraduate living with his parents at The Oaks, Ridgeway Road, Dorking, Surrey. His father David was a retired H.M. Customs Inspector.

Lindsay was commissioned in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve in December 1941, serving with H.M.S. Quebec from 30 June 1942 before being posted to H.M.S. Salsette in 1943, remaining with her until the end of the war.

H.M.S. Quebec was based on the shores at Loch Fyne in Scotland, its primary purpose was to train Army and Navy service personnel in the use of minor landing craft for landing assault troops, supplies, ammunition and weaponry onto heavily defended enemy occupied beaches, with R.A.F. support as required.

Lindsay died on 20 November 2002; sold together with an original photograph of the recipient.
