John William Bartlett was born at Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire on 12 November 1908 and enlisted with the Royal Navy on 31 January 1927 as Stoker Class II. Training ashore with Vivid II he was posted first to Hood in August 1927, remaining with her until his records were transferred in 1929.
Bartlett had been advanced Chief Stoker by 1942 when he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. at the shore base Spartiate, part of the Western Approaches Command. Seedie's roll notes his M.I.D. as being for service with H.M.S. Onslaught, an O-class destroyer which had been stationed in the channel from 1944 and had supported the Normandy Landings; sold together with copied research.
