Frederick George Howard was born at Bedenhall, Harlestow, Norfolk on 29 September 1898 and was living at Gate House, Thursley, Godalming, Surrey when he enlisted. Posted to the 8th Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps he was serving with them on 21 March 1918 when the German Spring Offensive began. The overwhelming offensive caught the Allies by surprise and the lines splintered, Howard was one of those who was taken a Prisoner of War at St. Quentin.

Repatriated after the war Howard appears to have been demobilised and rejoined as he has an entirely new number on his India General Service Medal. Enlisting at Doncaster on 26 February 1919, he saw extensive service in Waziristan on the North West Frontier.

The F. W. Howard who served in the Great war and the F. W. Howard who served in India have the same dates of birth and the same places of residence; sold together with copied research.
