A Great War Canadian Memorial Cross awarded to Lance Corporal G. Simmons, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, who died on 12 January 1925 as a result of his injuries and ailments from his Great War service

George Simmons was born on 3 May 1884 at London. He had previously served with the 4th Middlesex Rifles and at the time of enlistment was a plumber. Simmons enlisted at Ottawa on 27 August 1914 and served with Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, being stationed overseas from 20 December 1914.

Simmons was seriously wounded on 28 February 1915 when he suffered a gunshot wound to the right tibia. His records note that he was lying in water for 7 hours and would later suffer from pleurisy and pneumonia three times during the year. He was invalided from service on 14 April 1916 as he was found to be no longer fit - his injuries continued to plague him. Simmons died on 12 January 1925 as a result of his wounds and medical issues resulting from his war service.
