Canadian Memorial Cross, G.V.R., (55158 Pte B. Burton), with additional private clasp 'Courcelette', in fitted case of issue, lightly polished, otherwise very fine

Bert Burton was born in London on 3 June 1896 and was a designer by trade prior to enlisting in the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 19 November 1914 at Toronto. He was embarked on the Scandinavian on 13 May 1915 and arrived at Boulogne 14 September 1915.

The unit saw action during the Battle of the Somme during which Burton was killed in action on 11 September 1916, just prior to the Battle of Flers-Courcelette. He is buried in the Sunken Road Cemetery, Contalmaison, his pay and effects went to his mother who was living in Toronto.
