The Victory Medal awarded to Ordinary Seaman W.S. McBain, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who emigrated to Easthampton, Massachusetts, U.S.A., he became the head cashier at the First National Bank at Easthampton and died in 1934 being buried in the Easthampton cemetery

William Stein McBain was born on 15 February 1900 at St. Thomas, Norwich, one of six children of Alexander McBain, a tailor's cutter originally from Fife, Scotland. He enlisted in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 15 April 1918 and was shore based for the duration of the War. He was shore discharged on 19 February 1919.
Seeking fresh adventures William emigrated to the U.S.A., arriving in New York on 12 July 1920 onboard the Kaiserin Augusta Victoria giving his destination as Easthampton, Massachusetts where he joined his uncle, Thomas McBain, an insurance salesman in Easthampton.
He was initially employed as a furnace attender at the First National Bank at Easthampton, Massachusetts but quickly gained advancement to become the banks head cashier devoting his spare time to the American Legion where he became a Commandant as well as a notary public.
William died on 13 February 1934 and is buried in the Easthampton cemetery; sold together with copied research including his obituary and extracts from the Easthampton local newspapers. A full obituary which appeared in the Daily Hampshire Gazette, Friday 16th February 1934 accompanies the group.
