Victory Medal 1914-19 (J.11735 E. Gutteridge. A.B. R.N.), lightly polished, very fine

Ernest Gutteridge was born at Canterbury, Kent on 13 May 1895 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in May 1913.

Gutteridge experienced an extremely eventful war; posted to H.M.S. Landrail in June 1914 he was present when the first shots of the war were fired against the Konigen Luise on 5 August 1914. He was also present at Heligoland Bight on 28 August 1914 and at the Battle of Dogger Bank on 24 January 1915. Landrail had the misfortune to collide with Undaunted in April 1915 and despite being in a calamitous state was successfully towed back to safety; a journey which took 71 hours.

After significant repairs, Landrail took part in the Battle of Jutland and later sunk the German submarine UB-29 on 13 December 1916. Gutteridge left Landrail on 11 February 1917 and was transferred to the destroyer Setter. Setter had the misfortune to collide with her sister ship Sylph in thick fog off Harwich and subsequently sank, with the crew, including Gutteridge, being rescued.

Posted next to Teazer, which set a world speed record for a destroyer, Gutteridge took part in the Zeebrugge raid on 23 April 1918 after which Gutteridge was posted to Chatham and remained there until the end of the war. He was discharged to shore on 22 May 1925; sold together with a copy of his service record and research.
