British War Medal 1914-20 (J.2759 J. H. Simmonds. L.S. R.N.), pitting and contact marks, minor edge knock, otherwise very fine

John Herbert Simmonds was born in Chelsea, London on 16 October 1892, joining the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in 1915. Initially posted to Ganges where he was promoted to Boy 1st Class, he served on a variety of ships before being posted to Laurel in April 1916 and was onboard her at the Battle of Jutland.

Laurel, along with sisterships Landrail, Liberty and Lydiard, formed part of a Flotilla which were to provide cover to the British battlecruisers. In this case, the Flotilla was in the centre of the action but again failed to engage the German battle fleet in the confusion of the battle. However, the destroyer did rescue seventeen survivors from the battlecruiser Queen Mary.

Simmonds was discharged, invalided, to shore on 28 May 1919 with a war gratuity; sold together with a copy of his service record.
