The 1914-15 Star awarded to Corporal W. W. Summers, Royal Flying Corps, who was wounded in action and taken Prisoner of War as a result of being shot down on 3 September 1916

W. W. Summers joined the Royal Flying Corps on 22 November 1915. He entered the war in France on 14 December 1915 and became a Corporal Mechanic on 1 April 1916. Serving as a member of 23 Squadron on 3 September 1916 he took off at 6:16am in an FE2b piloted by Second Lieutenant F. D. H. Sams. They were attacked by 5 enemy aircraft and were shot down at 08:00 am by a captured Nieuport Scout at Mory, flown by Ltn G. Leffers. The aircraft (FE6934) was captured and it is possibly the one that Leffers was later killed in on 27 December 1916.
