(x) The 1914-15 Star awarded to Private F. P. Cook, 1/2nd Battalion (City of London), London Regiment, who was Killed in Action on the First Day of the Somme, 1 July 1916

1914-15 Star (1767 Pte. F. P. Cook. 2 - Lond.R.), good very fine

Frederick Percy Cook was born at Bow, London and baptised at St. Luke's, Camberwell on 23 June 1899, the son of George and Elizabeth Cook of 1 Renaldo Street, High Road, Balham. Enlisting with the Territorial Force in London he was mobilised with 'A' Company, 1/2nd Battalion, London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers) and entered the war in London on 6 January 1915. They were assigned to the Brigade reserve for the 'Big Push' on 1 July 1916 at the Somme.

When the leading Battalions attacked the Germans began a heavy barrage which prevented the men of 1/2nd Battalion from advancing in their support. The situation became desperate for those on the front and soon volunteers were called for amongst the Battalion to run the gauntlet with ammunition.

Two Companies, 'A' and 'B' Companies volunteered and attempted to reach their comrades. They were cut to pieces by mortar and machine gun fire with only all but 50 men from both companies becoming casualties. Cook was killed in action whilst attempting the crossing with 'A' Company, he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
