Walter Bell was born at Sheffield on 30 March 1892 and enlisted into the Royal Navy on 14 September 1909. He served on Leander from 23 October 1912 - 18 January 1915 before removing to Warspite from 1 April 1915. As such he was with her at the Battle of Jutland when she took a savage hammering in Beatty's Battlecruiser Fleet during the Run to the North. Leaving her for Vivid on 28 November 1917 he served as an Able Seaman until discharged to the Royal Fleet Reserve on 31 March 1922.
