He received his second Hurt Certificate on 19 July 1916 as a result of injury suffered on 26 December 1915 by a mine explosion whilst serving on the trawler Resono, this was an Admiralty trawler which was sunk by this mine near LV Light vessel off Harwich and a total of 13 people were lost. Tofton received a very severe compound fracture to his left leg which refused to unite until the beginning of April 1916, but he was left with a small issue possibly due to dead bone. He was discharged on 2 April 1919 and received a Disablement Gratuity of £25 on 11 October 1919, in addition he also received a Service and Rank Gratuity of £15. This was followed by Naval Prize Money of £20 in November 1922 with a Supplementary Award of £4 in October 1923. Tofton died on 15 August 1970.
