(x) The 1914 Star to Private J. Hewitt, East Lancashire Regiment who was taken Prisoner of War on 3 May 1915
1914 Star (6116 Pte J. Hewitt. 1/E.Lan.R.), with later clasp, polished, good fine
John Hewitt was born at Nenagh, Tipperary, Ireland. His service papers note that he had previous service in the Connaught Rangers and saw service in Egypt and India prior to the Great War - but was not entitled to any campaign medals. Hewitt re-enlisted at Accrington, Lancashire on 14 August 1914 and first entered the war on 22 August 1914, though his M.I.C. does not confirm entitlement to the clasp. He was posted as missing on 3 May 1915 and later confirmed as a P.O.W the same day. Hewitt was noted as being at Minden Camp in Germany on 26 July 1916 and was eventually repatriated on 15 December 1918 and was demobilized on 23 March 1919.
