Kenneth E. Sliter was born at Lowville on 20 September 1920, the son of Merton and Dora Sliter. Educated at Lowville Academy, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on 15 July 1942 and was posted to the 1st Beach Battalion of the Navy Amphibious Force on 3 November 1943. With this formation Sliter took part in the invasion of Sicily, Operation Husky, and Italy, notably his service papers confirm:
'Participated in the initial assault landing of the amphibious Invasion at Anzio on January 22, 1944.'
Joining Beach Battalion 'C' in December 1944 he joined the crew of the U.S.S. Bingham and landed with her at Okinawa. After the war Sliter settled back in Lowville and married Joyce Martin, founding a flower shop and garden centre there. He was active in the community, being part of the American Legion, notably a member of their Drum and Bugle Corps. He also volunteered at the Port Leyden Fire Department and was on the Board of the South Lewis Central School. Sliter died in 2011 and is buried at Port Leyden Cemetery, Port Leyden, Lewis Counts New York; sold together with an American Legion cap and copied research including service papers and photographs.
