James Black was born at Belfast, Northern Ireland on 29 January 1876 and was a fitter and turner when he enlisted in the Royal Navy on 15 February 1900. He served at a variety of shore bases prior to the Great War and from 7 October 1915 until the end of war he served on H.M.S. Martial. With her, Black saw action at the Battle of Jutland where Martial helped to screen the Grand Fleet.
