Edward John Davis was born in Boxford, Berkshire in 1866 and attested with the 3rd Royal Berkshire Militia in 1883, later transferring to the 2nd in 1885 and the 1st Royal Berkshires in 1888. He was posted around the world over the next decade, being stationed in Malta 1888-93, in Bermuda 1893-95, Nova Scotia 1895-98, the West Indies 1897-98, and finally in Gibraltar 1900-1902.
Davis was discharged as Colour Sergeant at Warwick in 1906 upon the termination of his second period of engagement, but during the Great War he attested as a Private in the Royal Berkshire Regiment in March 1915. He was immediately promoted Superintending Clerk, Warrant Officer First Class at the Infantry Records Office in Warwick. Davis was gazetted for his Meritorious Service Medal in 1919 and was finally discharged in July 1920; sold together with copied research and photograph of Davis.
