M.M. London Gazette
17 June 1919.

Frank Edward Mason was born in 1890 in Salford, Lancashire, one of six children to William and Margaret Mason. He married Ann Warburton in 1908 at Salford on 24 June 1908, with their son Frederick William being born at Salford on 19 January 1910. Mason worked as a contractor carter prior to attesting with the 4th Salford Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers on 1 June 1915. Very soon after enlisting, he was punished for an absence from 24 June until 1 July, for which he forfeited pay and had seven days drill as punishment.

Mason was posted to France with the Expeditionary Force, disembarking there on 29 January 1916. His service record shows that he was stationed in France until 1 January 1918, but he must have returned to the front at some point as he earned his M.M. for an engagement which took place on 14 October 1918. His M.M. was earned for gallantry in the field during the attack on the Salines-Steenbeck Road at Ledeghem, during which the 1st Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers managed to hold the line under heavy machine gun and trench mortar fire. This engagement was to be the 1st Battalion's final action of the War.

It is unknown when exactly he returned home for good, but Mason was discharged on 22 May 1919 and his medals were sent to him at 21 West Duke St., Salford. Mason died aged only 33 years at Prestwich on 31 December 1923, with his wife Ann receiving a widow's pension after his death; sold together with copied research, including service records and medal rolls.
