James Henry Littlely was born at Birkenhead, South Africa on 5 May 1894 and enlisted with the Royal Australian Navy on the outbreak of the Great War. Transferring to the Royal Australian Fleet Reserve for shore duty on 17 April 1916 he served there until 12 April 1918 when he joined the crew of the H.M.A.S. Sydney. Advanced Petty Officer with her after the war on 1 March 1919 he was discharged on 8 December 1920.
Re-engaging on 31 July 1921, Littlely saw service ashore with the various bases, mostly the Naval Staff Office Adelaide. He was still serving in this role on the outbreak of the Second World War, being swiftly posted to the Armed Merchant Cruiser Manoora.
Present with her in home waters Littlely was posted away before her journey to China, later joining H.M.A.S. Burnie. This corvette was present during the fall of Dutch controlled Java and aided in the evacuation efforts. She served with the Eastern Fleet for most of the war however Littlely was invalided from service on 24 June 1942. He is further entitled to the 1914-15 Star.
