Joseph William Appleby was born in Beenham, Berkshire in 1897 and joined the Royal Berkshire Regiment from the Berkshire Constabulary in 1915. Appleby joined the 1/4th Berkshire Regiment in Couin, France in May 1916 and soon afterwards joined the front line at Hebuterne where they faced heavy casualties and Appleby was wounded.
In November 1917, the unit was ordered to the Italian front, arriving at the front line near Piave in February 1918. Two months later, they began to transfer to the Asiago front where the regiment was positioned in the front line in the mountains. They spent much of the rest of the Great War battling against the Austrians in the area around Asiago, but had marched west to Vigalzano at the time of the armistice. Appleby returned home and married Edith Butler in Newbury in January 1921, and later died there on 22 April 1970; sold together with copied research.
