John Rupert Cox was born at Orange, New South Wales. He had been a labourer prior to enlisting into the 11th Light Horse Regiment on 20 August 1915 under the name John Rupert Walker. Cox was originally sent to Heliopolis and was appointed to Driver in France on 17 May 1916. He boarded Haverford on 1 June 1916, disembarking at Marseilles on 10 June 1916. Cox was absent from his billett for four hours on 14 August 1916 and given 7 days punishment, and the next year was given 90 days punishment for being absent from 9 p.m. on 11 March 1917 until 6.50 a.m. the next day. Cox was Court Martialled on 14 June 1917 and sentenced to 9 months hard labour as a result of disobeying a lawful command given by his Superior Officer on 10 May 1917 and placed in the military prison in Rouen. He reverted back to his original name of "Cox" on a declaration dated 22 July 1919. Cox returned to Australia on City of Exeter and disembarked on 26 August 1919 before finally being discharged on 10 October 1919.
