Charles Haycock was born in 1894 in Wolverhampton and enlisted with the Royal Berkshire Regiment at Smethwick, Staffordshire in 1914 before joining the Western Front, embarking at Folkestone with the 6th Royal Berkshire Regiment, 53rd Brigade, 18th Division in July 1915. The unit was engaged in their first major action at the first day of the Battle of the Somme in the attack on Montauban via Pommiers Trench, and played a prominent role at the Battle of Delville Wood on 19 July 1916. During the battle, they were subjected to numerous harsh counter attacks with 35 men of the Regiment declared killed in action on 19 July, including Haycock. Haycock is commemorated on the Thiepval Monument in Authuille, France which is dedicated to the missing servicemen who died in the Battles of the Somme without known graves; sold together with copied research.
