William Edward Barnes enlisted with the Royal Berkshire Regiment on 8 January 1915 and would have initially joined one of the training battalions. He was posted to France in July that year and joined the 5th Royal Berkshire Regiment at Ypres, later seeing action at the Battle of Loos in September where they moved into the support trenches. During the second attack on the Germans in October, they were positioned at the Hulluch Quarries. At the Battle of the Somme, the unit was engaged in the attack at Ovillers in July where the Regiment sustained over three hundred casualties. They were also involved in the German counter-attack at Poiziers in August where they were subjected to heavy artillery fire. Though the exact circumstances are unclear, Barnes was wounded in July or August during their engagement with the enemy at the Somme and was discharged due to his wounds as soon as the Regiment was relieved; sold together with copied research.
