A Great War trio awarded to Corporal L. W. Thorn, 1/4th Royal Berkshire Regiment

Leslie William Thorn was born in 1889 in Newbury, Berkshire and enlisted there with the 4th Royal Berkshire Territorial Force in 1909. The Battalion was retitled the 1/4th in September 1914 upon the formation of a second-line unit, Thorn was stationed in 'B' Company with the other men from Newbury. He was promoted Corporal in October ahead of embarking for Boulogne with his Regiment in March 1915. They first entered the front line the following month at Ypres, east of Ploegsteert Wood, and in July entered the front line at Hebuterne, near Arras. Thorn returned home in August 1915 and was discharged at Reading, afterwards marrying and residing in Newbury with his wife. That November, Thorn enlisted as Acting Corporal into the Royal Garrison Artillery at Newbury and later at Fort Brochurst, Gosport, and was made Acting Sergeant in 1916; sold together with a large quantity of copied research.
