A Great War trio awarded to Private W. Fleming, Berkshire Yeomanry, who was taken a prisoner of war during the Third Battle of Gaza and was imprisoned at Afion Karahissar in Turkey

1914-15 Star (2565. Pte. W. Fleming. Berks. Yeo.); British War and Victory Medals (2565), toning, overall very fine (3)

William Fleming disembarked at Gallipolli in November 1915 as part of the first draft of men received by the Berkshire Yeomanry after their heavy losses at Sulva Bay, but immediately re-embarked for Egypt with his Regiment. Once in Egypt, the Berkshire Yeomanry formed part of the newly organised 6th Mounted Brigade, with whom Fleming entered the Sinai and Palestine in January 1917. They were engaged in the First, Second and Third Battles of Gaza, where during the third of which Fleming was taken a prisoner of war, likely during the conflict on Zeitoun Ridge. Fleming was imprisoned at Afion Karahissar in Turkey, along with Captain A.W.M. Budgett, and after the armistice with the Turks on 30 October 1918 he appears on a list of Afion prisoners who the next month arrived in Southampton bound for London; sold together with copied research.
