Three: Sister E. M. Hebbes, Civilian Hospital Reserve

1914 Star, with later slide clasp (Miss E. M. Hebbes. Civ: Hosp: Res.), penultimate letter of surname officially corrected; British War and Victory Medals (Sister E. M. Hebbes.) mounted as worn, the Star gilt, good very fine (3)

Ethel Mary Hebbes served in the early days of the Great War on the Western Front at 10 General Hospital, Rouen, as a report by Matron M. Mark recalls:

'Miss Hebbes, Sister C.H.R. worked in this hospital, since mobilization in August 1914.

She is a good ward Sister, very reliable, conscientious & hard working, being very patient, cheerful & painstaking. She had charge of a large Medical Division for three months & gave every satisfaction. She has just completed one month duty as Night Sister.'

Hebbes thence went to No. 6 Stationary Hospital, before being transferred to Salonica in November 1915. She served at various Hospitals and Casualty Clearing Stations - whilst also being struck down with a bout of malariain September 1917 - and returned home upon her Contract Expiring in February 1918, also stating her '...urgent family matters' compelled her to leave her post. By October 1920 she was living at Calen House, Nightingale Road, Guildford, Surrey; sold together with copied service record.
