(x) A Great War 'trio' awarded to Private T. R. Cawkell, Coldstream Guards
1914 Star (9422 Pte T. R. Cawkell C. Gds:); British War and Victory Medals (9422 Pte. T.R. Cawkell. C. Gds.), toning, contact wear, very fine (3)
Thomas Reginald Cawkell was born circa 1891 in Brantingham, Yorkshire, one of seven children born to Edwin and Esther Cawkell. According to the 1911 census, he was working as a butcher's shop assistant in Hull prior to his attestation with the Coldstream Guards. Cawkell likely enlisted upon the outbreak of the Great War, as he is noted to have disembarked at France on 12 August 1914.
Cawkell's M.I.C. indicates that at some point he misplaced his 1914 Star, applying for a new one on 5 March 1920. The replacement medal was sent to him a few months later on 17 May 1920 to 61 Laycock Street, Middlesborough, Yorkshire. Cawkell soon returned to Hull where he married Florence Abson in 1921. He later died there at the age of 60 on 14 August 1951; sold together with copied research and medal rolls.
