W. Thorpe joined the 2nd Royal Berkshire Regiment from the South African Reserve in October 1899 and served in the B Company. Colesberg was the first action seen by the Regiment in South Africa, where Thorpe's Company was under command of Lieutenant-Colonel McCracken and successfully captured the hill between Colesberg and Coleskop from the Boers, thereafter nicknamed "McCracken Hill". Thorpe was wounded on 3 January 1900, and McCracken Hill was evacuated the next month with the unit returning to Rensburg. Thorpe was discharged at Cape Town on 23 January 1902.
Sold together with copied research and original boxes of issue, though heavily damaged and in poor condition.
