William Thomas Dobbs was born at Stonehouse, Devon on 29 December 1856 and enlisted as Boy Class II on 1 January 1873. Reaching his majority aboard Triumph the following year he was advanced Able Seaman with Achilles in 1879.

Joining Thalia on 27 July 1882 he was with her as she operated in the Mediterranean in support of the British Army in Egypt. Remaining with her after the war as Thalia was engaged in shipping troops to China. Dobbs was invalided from service on 7 September 1883; sold together with copied service papers and medal roll.
