Edward Osborne was born at Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire on 23 July 1842 and enlisted on 1 December 1859 as Boy Class I. Reaching his majority two years later he was posted to Shearwater, being advanced Able Seaman with her on 1 January 1865 on the Pacific Station.
Appointed Captain of the Foretop with Juno on 1 August 1868 he continued to serve, being posted to Rattlesnake on 11 April 1873 as Coxswain of the ship's Launch. Notably the ship's commander Commodore John Edmund Commerell, later Admiral of the Fleet and V.C., was wounded in the lung leading a reconnaissance on the Pra River.
Appointed Captain of the Quarterdeck with Serapis on 13 November 1877, Osborne was pensioned ashore on 20 October 1880.
