Neville George Dennis was born in Little Barningham, Norfolk on 24 May 1937 and was a farm worker prior to his attestation into the Grenadier Guards at Norwich on 4 June 1956, at age nineteen. He served at home until being posted to the British Army of the Rhine, 1st Battalion, from 31 January to 19 October 1957, when he returned to the United Kingdom. Dennis remained in England before volunteering for service in Cyprus, where he was posted to the 2nd Battalion from 20 June until 1 December 1958. He served at home until his discharge on 3 June 1959. Only a month after his discharge, Dennis married his first wife Ann on 4 July 1959 in Salford, Lancashire, after which they resided together at Weastle, Salford. His first marriage ended at an unknown point, and Dennis is recorded as having married Elizabeth Rides at Norwich in 1969.
