George Cole Bowness was born at Alberton, Prince Edward's Island on 4 June 1886. He was farming when he joined the 1st University Company, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry at Montreal on 10 April 1915. He landed in France in July 1915 and was wounded in action at Sanctuary Wood on 2 June 1916. Having recovered, Bowness was to be killed in action at Regina Trench on 8 October 1916 and was later commemorated upon the Vimy Memorial.
