L. J. Smith served with the Royal Australian Naval Brigade. The Royal Australian Naval Brigade was the Royal Australian Navy's primarily non-seagoing reserve organisation during the First World War.
Dennis Tabell, a 45-year-old seaman of 52 Kensington Street, Sydney, Australia enlisted in the 1st Mining Corps, Australian Imperial Force on 28 January 1916 embarking for service in France on HMAT Star of Victoria on 31 March 1916. Whilst the Mining Corps was disbanded in October 1916, the Tunnelling Companies were embodied within the Royal Engineers and played key roles in France. Dennis returned to Australia on 4 May 1917.
