British War Medal 1914-20 (Lieut. A. W. Figg. R.N.), sold together with named box of issue, good very fine

Alfred William Figg was born on 11 May 1867 and served as an enlisted man in the Royal Navy. Appointed Warrant Officer on 1 April 1895 when he was posted to the training school Excellent as a Gunner.

Figg remained there until the summer he was posted to the pearl-class cruiser Walleroo, freshly returned from the Australia Station. Holding the role of Gunner for two years here he was transferred to Royal Arthur on 21 April 1897 and went ashore the same year.

Serving in a number of posts over the next few years Figg spent four years on the Mediterranean Station with Formidable and two years at Malta with the Royal Naval Reserve. Returning to Britian in 1910 he was appointed to Vernon for service with Torpedo destroyers, being promoted Chief Gunner there.

Posted to Hecla in 1913 he went ashore to Victory I in July 1914 and remained there until 1 May 1916 when he was advanced Lieutenant. Ordered to Sandhurst in August Figg later undertook storekeeping duties.

With the end of the war, he joined the staff at the Clyde District in January 1919. Figg's final posting was given command of the Gun Mountings at Rosyth Dockyards in 1920 before being placed on the Retired List on 15 May 1922. He died on 21 April 1941.
